Lasting Powers of Attorney

What is it?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that lets you appoint someone to make decisions about your welfare, money or property.

It can be used at any time when if you are not able to make your own decisions or if you would prefer someone else to look after your affairs for you:

  • Long Term Illness
  • Moving into a Care Home
  • Loss of mental capacity

There are many reasons why a Lasting Power of Attorney could be needed.

There are two types of Power of Attorney Property and Affairs or Health and Well Being.

None of us know what the future holds and there may come a time when you are unable to make decisions about your own life (losing mental capacity) or just want someone to take care of your financial affairs for you.

It isn’t a very pleasant thought and if it happens no one can do much about it, however by putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place you can ensure that you can appoint the person who makes the decisions about your life rather than leaving it to someone you don’t know.

How it can work for you

Once a Lasting Power of Attorney has been completed it is registered with the Office of the Public Guardian and is then able to be used.

  • Looking after day to day bills
  • Making sure you receive the best health care
  • Maintaining your home

A lasting Power of Attorney can allow someone else to deal with all of this and much, much more.

Because it’s a very important document and requires detailed explanation we recommend arranging a Lasting Power of Attorney through a face to face consultation.

We recommend that you consider having those persons that you wish to appoint as attorneys present at the meeting to enable them to ask any questions that they may have as well.
